Viking Spear Shock-Cutout Motorcycle Saddlebags Review

After a good deal of research, I decided on the VikingBags Custom Spear Shock-Cutout saddlebags for my Harley-Davidson XL1200C.
When they arrived, my first impression was that the bags were well made and quite sturdy for the price. My intention was to use the throw-over option.
Now, when I first installed the bags to see how they'd look, I was VERY impressed! They looked like they were made for my Sportster! They had a nice fit, close to the bike, thanks to the shock cut-out.
And then, following the rather poor instructions, I assembled the mounting bracket (yes, the bracket is recommended even with the throw-over option used) and mounted it to my bike, using longer bolts than ones supplied in the kit, to accommodate my sissy bar side plates.
Then, I put the bags back on the bike.
Major design flaw, VikingBags!
It this were a standard model, the bags might have fit just fine. However, with the Shock Cut-out, the bags do NOT hug the bike; there is a very wide (2.75") gap caused by the combination of the bracket and the Cut-out. Looks aside, my first ride verified my worries: the bags caught wind even at low speeds and started "flapping" away from the bike (yes, I had the bag-bottom straps secured the bracket, as per the instructions.
So, my only option is to shell out for a mounting bracket made by another company (they run fifty to seventy-five bucks) and HOPE it works, or remove the very ugly VikingBags mounting bracket, skip a bracket altogether, and figure out a way to keep the bags away from moving parts.
A note on the strap on the bottom of the bags: each bag has a .75" wide strap with only a connection (plastic snap) on one end to snap it to the buckle mounted to the bag. That's it. No additional buckle-and-slider to offer a genuine "quick release" rather than TYING the end of the strap to the support bracket!
I REALLY wanted to give a sterling review of the VikingBags Custom Spear Shock-Cutout saddlebags, but a mounting bracket that does NOT take the chock cut-out into account made this a VERY disappointing purchase.
UPDATE:
After a bit of research, I decided to order the Saddlemen Support Bracket Kit 3501-0346. From the photos, it appeared the brackets would hold the bags away from the bike at a slight angle, as opposed to other models which appeared to have a much greater angle (including a single-mount-point model recommended by VikingBags with a fairly extreme angle).
The Saddleman brackets work extremely well! They hold the bottoms of the Viking Spear Shock Cut-out bags just enough away from the bike to give safe clearance to the belt drive and brake mechanism, while allowing the bags to fit snugly to the bike and fit around the shocks nicely.
Had a mounting bracket similar to the Saddleman been included for throw-over use, VikingBags would have scored a solid five stars.
Now, with proper mounting brackets, I can say that, overall, the VikingBags are a good investment. Good quality and sturdy construction at a very reasonable cost.
(Note: though I did not require it, the Saddleman kit came with a turn signal relocation kit that appears much better made than the unit that comes with the VikingBags, for those needing to relocate the lights.)
