Okay, here's what happened. I ordered the 3 inch lift kit for my 1994 Chevy Suburban and it arrived ahead of schedule and in great condition. I opened the box and there was double handfuls of bolts and nuts and brackets and clamps and tubes, geegaws and whachamacallits and a little tube of locktite. The next morning I was up early and following the directions that came in the box, prepping my truck to be lifted. Removing the grill and front bumper was easy. Disconnecting the emergency brake cable, also easy. Disconnecting the gas filler hoses...not quite as easy. Loosening the stock body mount bolts...goodness godness agnes!! It took me the rest of the day to get ONE of those things undone. Even with copious amounts of PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench and a plethora of swear words those things would not come off easy. And these things are on a rust free Texas truck. It seems that GM installed them in the factory with some kind of alien technology bolt treatment epoxy goop to keep them from backing out. Anyway, this crap is immune to any of the treatments I applied that usually chemically loosen a bolt. The following day I went and got a 1/2 inch breaker bar (because no self respecting shade tree garage should be without one of those mamma-jamma's) which made things only moderately easier and I was able to get two more off that whole day. The next day I went out and bought an impact wrench and compressor and that made things go a little faster. After a total of about 6 hours of heavy cranking each bolt about an eighth of a turn at a time, I got them all loose. All TWELVE of them. On day three (or is it four at this point?) it was time to lift. Fairly straight forward and it all went pretty easy, but see if you can lure a buddy in with the promise of some beer to help you, and after you're done putting all the spacers in (did I mention that there were TWELVE of them?) you can see the fruits of your labor. The truck looks amazing and for what I paid for the kit itself, a raging bargain. But here's a few things you should know...1. The instructions are VERY generic. More than a little imagination is necessary to figure out what you're being told to do and which bolt/washer/nut goes where. If you don't have at least basic mechanical knowledge, don't try to do it yourself. Just for kicks I called a local shop who claimed they'd be happy to put it on for me for $450 plus parts. I put them on hold and as far as I know, they're still standing there holding the phone to their overcharging ear.
2. Buy more locktite. Don't be cheap, you don't want those bolt backing out on you, after all, they are what is keeping you and your truck body from sliding off onto the pavement.
3. You're going to end up with a lot of left over nuts and bolts. Don't worry about this as long as what you have installed on the truck is secured. And considering left over things, I did not re-install the lower fan shroud with the provided brackets. I decided to take my chances.
4. Some Suburban's evidently have a main gas tank filler hose and a little vapor return hose. There's no extension for this one in the kit, just go up to your parts store and get a length of hose and replace the whole thing for about $2.
5. You WILL need to weld. The automatic shifter linkage rod is not long enough to stay engaged. Hopefully there is a place near you that can tack the provided extension onto the end for you. I called the closest shop near me and was told that I probably wouldn't be charged, depending on the mood they were in when I brought it in. Just remove the whole rod and take it and the extension to the welding shop. Took them about 5 minutes.
6. I didn't need to use the steering shaft extender as there was enough play in mine to take up the 2 or so inches it stretched (steering shafts are designed to do this) but your experience may vary and more than likely will.
7. Consider a gap cover kit (also available on Amazon). When you lift the body, the frame is WAY exposed and so is the engine. Now personally I like this look as it reminds me of old school Blazers and Suburbans from when I was a pup, but I know some people prefer a cleaner appearance.
All that being said, it was a learning experience and I'm glad I did it. Would I do it again? Let me put you on hold...
