National Cycle Plexistar 2 - Clear N8262-10 Review
I did a lot of research for what would be the right cool weather windshield for my 1995 Vulcan 800A (VN800A). I had started to look at the Memphis Shades "Batwing" but they didn't make it to fit my bike. I did like the Batwing looks, but not for twice the price of the Plexistar 2 (P2)Another thing I liked was the installation. This P2 has adjustable lowe and upper quick disconnect bracket, so I could change angles and height easily enough until I became satisfied with both the look and the areas of protection, mainly the handlebar side extensions which sets this windshield apart from the rest. I plan on riding on cooler days also, so deflecting some wind off the handlebars is just as important.
I also needed to order the 1" upper handlebar attachment brackets separatly directly from National Cycle, which came to under $20 inclding shipping.
I had to ask myself if the 18.5 height was too high, but since you can change the angle of the brackets, the more angle aft- the lower the windshield height. I'll still experiment with the angles over the next week, but the good news is that it's December and I'm still riding.
The color of the windshield acrylic is slightly blue.
I ordered in on a Sunday night, and the box was on my doorstep on Tuesday afternoon. Not bad since I ordered the slowest & cheapest shipping.
I attached the lower brackets first as the brackets came the next day on Wednesday afternoon from National Cycle. Installation took longer than needed as I experimented with moving bracket locations up/down/in/out. The only extra tools actually needed was a slotted screwdriver or a 1/4" nut driver to tighten the lower clamps. The Allen key for the upper brackets were included.
Since I was doing this by myself I used a spring clamp to hold the two halves of the upper bracket in place that added some pressre to enable the screws to more easily engauge the nut portion of the opposing bracket
The lower bracket that grips the extension rods also needed a little encouragment to allow the wing-nut threads to engauge the nut portoion of the bracket, so I used a pair of pliers to help close the clamp. A measuring device is handy for matching the pair of lower bracket extension rods. I also used a credit card as a gauge to set the height of the pair of lower bracket fork clamps.
Very easy installation and would take less than 1/2 hr with two people drinking beer.
My handlebars are stock which probably 8-inches above the tripple tree. This windscreen would fit handlebars that are lower (drag bars) as there was at least 4 inches of gap between the top of the headlamp and the lower portion of the windshield. I could have raised it up more but I'll wait and see since it's adjustable.
I plan on removing the windshield for warm weather riding.
