98-09 Ford Ranger S/S Bull Bar Review

AutoMaxStyling is providing a very nice bull bar at a great price. It is genuinely beautiful with heavy brackets, nice welds and highly polished stainless steel. The hardware is very nicely plated. The bar has pre-drilled holes with rubber plugs to allow for off road lights as the picture suggests. I'm not certain 6" lights will fit so pay attention to other reviews in that regard. Instructions are in plane English but confusing (for me) because all applications are integrated in each paragraph. In more than one instance it was not so clear what applied to my version of Ranger and what should be ignored.

In my case, the finished work left the bar somewhat movable. I am able to pull the bull bar down and away from the grille by nearly 3 inches and return it again even though all hardware is tightened very well. It would require welding the frame brackets to the mounting brackets to prevent this. Also, while tightening the frame brackets to and through the frame mounting holes I inadvertently smashed the truck's frame tube by about a quarter of an inch. I'm not a gorilla and used moderate force but the mounting method leaves a little to be desired in this regard. Once again, the only solution would be to tighten lightly and then weld everything in place after assembly. In other words weld the frame brackets to the truck's frame and let the bolts simply hold things in place for the welder.

That being said the end result is a very attractive addition to the front of my truck. It's pushing usefulness is a question mark as any serious contact with a small tree or other obstacle of equal resistance would eminently result in grille damage not to mention marring one beautiful polished bull bar. I don't intend to use it this way so all is well. The movability is also of no consequence as I don't take to the trails. Another point that is simply the nature of the beast is the fact that my front towing hooks are now inaccessible. That I can pull the bull bar forward and down by hand my prove to be a benefit in this regard rather than a detriment. These negatives are not meant to criticize - they are simply a warning to anyone buying the bar for a practical reason rather than cosmetics. I think real bull bars meant for off roading are considerably more expensive for a reason.

One word of caution: The bar is obviously produced and packaged in China. Sometimes these overseas shipments contain a powdery substance; probably to absorb moisture during transit. I shouldn't have un-packaged the bull bar in the house. The powder, in my case is an airborne irritant that had me struggling with respiration for hours.

I would recommend the AutoMaxStyling's bull bar with the reservation that you should buy it for the show and not so much the go.
