im impressed with the nakamichi na 400 sound is very uncolored its hard to say if the na 400 sounds abetter than the cd400 but its definately different (i own both cd400 and na400 running through an audison amplifier) na400 seems to have a nice preamp section it doesnt fatiuge my ears it seems to me da conversion is not as important in the design as the preamp is but thats just a guess. I had a pioneer deh80 from frys electronics before but it was too sparkly sounding but very good converter , i think it was lacking in the preamp section the na400 sounds beter than the pioneer deh 80 not by much but its smoother and more natural sounding the pioneer sounded a little more detailed but sounded like "pioneer" if that makes any sense all the pioneer stuff has a color to it, decent but not natural. The knobs and buttons are ultra tight on the Nakamichi and rubber coated and the nak feels more sophisticated than pioneer. so thats it so far ive only had the na 400 for 2 days so if anything changes il repost .So far i like it alot and torn between the cd 400 and na 400 both are great but different sounding not better or worse just diff na 400 is more digital but open and natural and the cd400 is more musical but missing some openess , maybe the nex gen Naks will be ultra perfec - great conversion and great preamp and decent price like around 200.00- 300.00 dollars and i have never heard annything from mcintosh or dennon but i know they are great companys that care alot about music and its feeling when u hear it through ultra clean components
